Iran opens U23 World C’ship with loss

TEHRAN, Aug. 19 (MNA) – Young Iranian volleyball players suffered a loss in the face of Argentinian rivals in their opening encounter at the 2017 FIVB Volleyball Men's U23 World Championship in Egypt.

Organized by the sport's world governing body, FIVB, the third edition of the international volleyball tournament and the world championship for men's national teams under the age of 23 is under way in Cairo, Egypt.

On Friday, Argentina out powered Iran 4-2 (16-14, 11-15, 15-11, 18-16, 13-15, 15-10) to wrap up opening day of Pool B at the 2017 FIVB Men's U23 World Championship.

It is worth noting that all matches in Cairo are played under a new scoring system dubbed ‘a best-of-seven, 15-point set format’.

Argentina cancelled two Iran set points in the first while making a run of four straight points from 12-14 down to 16-14. It then took them six set points to finish the fourth 18-16.

Iran was slightly better in blocking and serving, but lacked in killing efficiency. Rasoul Aghchehli with 22 points was the best scorer of the Persian side.

Juan Manualn Cichello’s boys are scheduled to take up China today in their second Pool B encounter. The Chinese outfit managed to breeze past Turkey (4-3) on Friday.

The tournament is being held in Cairo, Egypt from 18 to 25 August 2017. A total of 12 teams divided into two pools are competing in the event.
